Newton confident New Road will be fit to play
WORCESTERSHIRE are confident of finally getting a cricket match played at their New Road ground next week.
The 2007 NatWest Pro40 champions are set to host neighbours Warwickshire on Tuesday in their first pre-season friendly and, despite last week's floods, chief executive Mark Newton is hopeful that the game will go ahead as planned.
The County have not played at their home since June last year when the devastating floods hit and even though the ground was under water once more last week only more heavy rain would stop the game being played.
"As we stand we will be staging the match," Newton said. "Everyone is desperate to have cricket back at New Road. It won't be a dry, flat boring wicket - there will be a bit of nip in it.
"The flood was only a short one, there wasn't a lot of damage and their was no rubbish to clear so there isn't a risk," added Newton.
Tuesday's match with Warwickshire is the first of four friendlies that Worcestershire will play before heading to Edgbaston on Wednesday, April 16 to face the Bears in the opening game of the LV County Championship Division Two season.
